The Hickory Family Tree

It’s been a long time since I blogged anything and I promise from now on, you’ll get more posts from me. For now this is a short one, with a visual.
I wanted to chat, briefly about world building and what to include in your formatted books once the time come ton design them. Firstly, it’s so fun building a world, and I love it when I see that authors have taken the time to include maps they’d had designed, or character art. For me, when it came to the third book, I felt that if I was going to include anything then it had to be a family tree.
The Hickory family go way back, and their tree begins in America in the new world in the 18th century and is headed by Joseph and Delilah Hickory and travels all the way down to the modern day Adlers, which include Win and her sister Rowan.
Why is it important to include these details in your world building? You can argue that it is just to make the book pretty, and half the time I skim over maps in books, keen to get on with the actual story, but I’ll go back later and check for reference.
But in this case, I HAD to make one, for myself as reference, so why not get it illustrated at the same time? It serves a purpose and it was a good way to keep me on track, to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything or anyone. It was also a lot of work, making sure I had everyone’s dates correct, plus their death dates, maiden names. I used an online tool called Family Echo, and that was amazing and I was able to get it printed and sent to the lovely lady who designed my tree.
You’ll notice it has a very unique design, like the Hickory family themselves, it’s a stripped, ghostly winter tree with sprawling spiky branches, like barbed wire. I loved what K. A Winters did with the design, and she was great, I’ll link her below.
If you want to find K.A Winters online she has a great gig on Fiverr, and is able to draw so many types of trees with various designs!
